This hidden gem is the perfect place to relax in a tranquil coastal setting while also being within driving distance of all the great attractions and activities that Yeats Country has to offer. After the perfect night’s sleep in a cosy bed, wake up to incredible views of land and sea, and start the day with a delicious breakfast including freshly made brown bread & scones.

How to get here

From Sligo take the N15 to Drumcliff. At Drumcliff turn off after Yeats Tavern Restaurant to your left, sign posted Lissadell/Raugley. Travel straight towards Carney Village, go through small village and after passing Laura’s Pub turn left. Travel straight for approx 8km passing Lissadell Estate on your left. Our home is sign posted along this road. You will pass Dunleavy’s shop on your left and continue straight until next left turn sign posted Ballyconnell. Continue down road and take first right. Continue straight to the bottom of the road, you will see the Atlantic Ocean straight in front of you, turn left and Ocean Heights is the second house on the left.

Lovely and perfect place : cosy room, beautiful landscape. Our host was so cool, her smile is a lovely one. She love to give the best to her visitors. The breakfast was perfect. Probably, we will come back, may be next year. Thank you so much

This was our favorite B&B! Stunning views and just a short walk to the cliffs. Karen is a lovely host and shared lots of information and local recommendations! The rooms were comfortable and the food was wonderful.

Atlantic Sheepdogs: Atlantic sheepdogs offers you the opportunity to see some of the worlds smartest sheepdogs, working in their natural environment. Martin Feeney, who together with his dogs, has represented Ireland on an International stage on numerous occasions over the past twenty years, demonstrates how sheepdogs are used to move sheep around mountains and fields, on a typical Irish Farm. You will also learn how the dogs are trained, about the many different breeds of sheep reared on the Atlantic Sheepdogs Farm and all about life on the farm. Atlantic Sheepdogs Farrm overlooks Streedagh Beach, a 3km long, beautiful sandy beach. This is an ideal place to go for one of the most scenic walks on the west coast of Ireland.
Benbulbin Mountain - Hiking/Walking: Benbulben is a majestic mountain that overlooks the beautiful North Sligo countryside known as Yeats Country. Benbulben means Jaw Peak and the mountain was shaped that way by glaciers during the Ice Age. The mountain is also the setting of several Irish legends. It is believed to have been one of the hunting grounds of the Fianna and the resting pace of Diarmuid and Grainne. Benbulben features prominently in the poetry of W. B. Yeats, after whom Yeats Country is named and County Sligo is considered integral to the poet’s work.
Bird Watching: Ocean Heights is located in one of the best mainland areas for Sligo bird watching. Wintering Barnacle Geese are most regularly seen from October to April each year at Lissadell, Raghly and Cloonagh. The Barnacle Geese roost most nights on Inishmurray Island and dramatic dusk and dawn flights, to and from the island, can be seen from Ocean Heights. Other Species Other species that can been seen from Ocean Heights during Autumn and Winter include: Whooper Swan, Pink footed Goose, Brent Goose, Canada Goose, Eider Long Tailed Duck, Common Scoter, Red Breasted Merganser, Red Throated Diver, Great Northern Diver, Hen Harrier, Merlin, Peregrine, Little Stint, Curlew Sand Piper, Purple Sand Piper, Dunlin, Arctic Skua, Auks, Leach’s Petrel, Grey Phalarop, Pomarine and Storm Petrel.
Carrowmore and Creevykeel Tombs: Ancient Megalithic Tombs which are located only 15-25 mins from us
Coastal Activities: There are plenty of coastal activities to enjoy nearby including Horse Riding on Streedagh Beach, Stand Up Paddle Boarding in Lissadell, Coasteering in Mullaghmore or taking a Boat Trip to Inishmurray Island. Our home is also ideally located for Walking and Birdwatching.
Ellens Pub - Irelands oldest Pub: Ellen’s Pub Sligo is just a 3 minute drive or a 15 minute walk from Ocean Heights B&B and is reputed to be the oldest pub in Sligo having opened in 1610. Ellen’s has a great atmosphere and the pints are also very good. The locals are welcoming and friendly and live music is played here every Friday night.
Fishing: The West coast of Ireland is recognised as one of the best sea fishing spots in the world. The diverse nature of Sligo’s coastline and it’s position on the edge of Europe where it’s waters are warmed by the North Atlantic Drift means that marine life here is extremely rich and varied. Your host Stephen is an experienced lobster fisherman and will be happy to advise you on the best fishing spots. Offshore Sea Fishing Trips on the M.V. Kiwi Girl are a great day out for both novices and experts alike. We welcome individuals, families and groups including; hens & stags. Our experienced skipper Declan Kilgannon can take you to some of the best inshore fishing grounds around Mullaghmore, Sligo and Donegal. ~ offshore.ie
Glencar Lake & Waterfall: Glencar Waterfall is 50ft high and is situated in Glencar Lough, just a 20 minute drive from Ocean Heights. It is particularly impressive after rain and can be viewed from a lovely wooded walk. There are more waterfalls visible from the road, although none is quite as romantic as this one. Glencar waterfall served as an inspiration to William Butler Yeats and features in his poem ‘The Stolen Child’: ‘Where the wandering water gushes From the hills above Glen-Car, In pools among the rushes That scarce could bathe a star, We seek for slumbering trout And whispering in their ears Give them unquiet dreams; Leaning softly out From ferns that drop their tears Over the young streams. Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wild With a faery, hand in hand, For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.’
Gleniff Horseshoe: The Gleniff Horseshoe loop is a valley in North Sligo known for it’s breath taking scenery and dramatic landscape. It is a short half an hour drive from Ocean Heights B&B and when you get there make sure to travel clockwise around the loop for the best views. As you enter Gleniff Horseshoe you can see the remains of an old barytes mill on the left and driving through you can spot Diarmuid and Grainne’s cave. This cave is said to be the last resting place of legendary Irish figures Diarmuid and Grainne. Gleniff Horse Shoe is mostly uninhabited now due to famine times and emmigration and you can see some ruined cottages and an abandoned school house beside the road. Make sure to stop several times along the way to make the most of the beautiful scenery and take a few photos. There is also a lovely picnic area.
Lissadell House & Gardens: Lissadell House is a neo-classical Greek revivalist style country house that was built between 1830 and 1835. Located only 5 minutes from Ocean Heights B&B, Lissadell Estate was the childhood home of Irish revolutionary, Constance Gore-Booth, her sister the poet and suffragist, Eva Gore-Booth, and their siblings, Mabel Gore-Booth, Mordaunt Gore-Booth and Josslyn Gore-Booth. Lissadell was also the sometime holiday retreat of the world-renowned poet, William Butler Yeats. In his famous poem “In Memory of Eva Gore-Booth and Con Markiewicz” Yeats laments their loss: The House itself has a large collection of paintings and literature by George ‘AE’ Russell, Jack Yeats, WB Yeats, Eva Gore Booth, and contemporary Artists and authors. The renovated Tea Rooms serve wholesome country fare including quiches, scones and salads using fruit and vegetables from the Gardens, and oysters from Lissadell’s own oyster beds. Mullaghmore: Mullaghmore, Ireland’s premier big wave surfing spot is a small fishing village and popular tourist destination located just 20 minutes from Ocean Heights B&B. Lying close to the borders of Counties Leitrim and Donegal, Mullaghmore has stunning views of Benbulben Mountain and Donegal and Sligo Bay. Mullaghmore Head has been named a discovery point on the second section of the Wild Atlantic Way route which runs from Mullaghmore Head to Keem Strand. On a walk around the head you can enjoy the spectacular waves and take a photograph of the iconic Classie Bawn Castle, home of the late Lord Mountbatten. Visable from Ocean Heights and only 15 minutes away.
Raughley Harbour: Located about 4 miles from Lissadell, and 4 miles from Ocean Heights, the harbour was at one time extremely busy, having seven permanent harbour pilots on call all the time. The harbour also had a fish curing factory attached to it and served as a base for the Coast Guard until 1920. The harbour, although with some recent modifications, still displays well preserved details from it’s original structure such as cut limestone steps and mooring posts. The simple and well-constructed boat house is also of considerable interest and the harbour structures make an attractive group along with the, now derelict, coastguard station to the north-west. Nowadays, the harbour is home to local fishing boats, recreational craft and a wide variety of sea birds. There is also a very scenic 5km looped walk you can take from the harbour which takes in fantastic views of Rosses Point, Sligo Bay and Benbulben and Knocknarea mountains. Apparently this walk was also a great favourite of Sligo’s famous poet W.B. Yeats.
Rosses Point: Rosses Point is a charming coastal village 25 minutes drive from Ocean Heights B&B. The village is home to the Country Sligo Golf Club, Sligo Yacht Club and Sligo Lifeboat Station. Rosses Point has a beautiful Green Coast Award winning Blue Flag Beach that has panoramic views of Knocknarea, Sligo Bay, Benbulben and the Atlantic Ocean. Some of the landmarks Rosses Point is best known for include The Metal Man, The Blackrock Lighthouse and the Lady Waiting on the Shore. The village was the home of W.B. & Jacks Yeats Uncle Henry Middleton. Both brothers spent many summers in the area inspiring both their poetry and painting.
Sliabh League: Sliabh Liag is Ireland’s ultimate sea cliff experience and a signature point on the Wild Atlantic Way coastal touring route. Sliabh Liag is a place of sacred Christian pilgrimage and a rich Irish heritage and culture. Located in the Gaeltacht region of County Donegal Sliabh Liag are the highest accessible sea cliffs in Europe where the cliff face of Bunglas rises over 600m above the ocean below. Prepare to be dazzled by the panoramic view across Donegal Bay, which is simply breathtaking. Experience the unique wonders of the natural biodiversity of marine flora and fauna found here. A natural masterpiece of colour across a land and seascape where azure skies, wispy white clouds and cool blue seas meet the sun beaming light onto the myriad of hues of ancient rock formations shades of green and purple heather. Sliabh Liag is only an 1 1/2 drive from Ocean Heights and you can see the cliffs on a clear day across the ocean.
Streedagh Beach: Streedagh Beach is a beautiful 3km stretch of strand only 10 minutes away from Ocean Heights B&B. Streedagh Beach has won a Green Coast Award for its excellent water quality and beautiful rural location. The beach is very popular for walking, horse riding and kite surfing all year round and is the perfect spot for swimming during the summer months when lifeguards are on duty. The limestone cliffs and rocks that can be found to the west Streedagh Beach contain many species of fossil coral. Zaphrentis are particularly common here, formed about four hundred million years ago.
SUP - Stand up Paddling: Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) Sligo is the perfect spot for the up and coming sport of Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Supping is an offshoot of surfing where you stand upright on a board and paddle through the water. It suits all ages and there are plenty of options available in Sligo to suit all abilities. Supping spots close to us in Sligo include Lissadell, Streedagh and Mullaghmore.
Surfing: Ocean Heights is beside some of the best surfing in Sligo. Mullaghmore is only 15 minutes away and has been named one of the best big wave surfing locations in the world. Lessons can also be arranged for beginners in the nearby Stradhill or Bundoran surf schools.

W.B. Yeats Grave: Famous poet William Butler Yeats chose the courtyard at St. Columba’s church of Ireland in Drumcliff as his final resting place. The church yard is a peaceful location that lies in the shadow of Benbulben mountain and Yeats’ paternal grandfather was also a rector here. Although Yeats died in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France in January 1939, his remains were brought home to Ireland by the Irish Naval Service and re-interred at Drumcliff in 1948 as it was his wish to rest: “Under bare Ben Bulben’s head In Drumcliff churchyard Yeats is laid. An ancestor was rector there Long years ago, a church stands near, By the road an ancient cross. No marble, no conventional phrase; On limestone quarried near the spot By his command these words are cut: Cast a cold eye On life, on death. Horseman, pass by!” His grave can be found in the church yard marked with a simple headstone and the inscription he requested; ” Cast a cold eye On life, on death. Horseman, pass by”.
