Food Lovers Heaven

Anna Rossi from Turin, Italy tells of her fabulous Food Lovers holiday

Watching the sunrise over a glassy calm river in the west of Ireland while indulging in a breakfast of warm home-baked Irish brown bread, sausages, bacon, spicy black pudding and an organic egg is a sublime experience.

Freshly Baked Bread

I’m just home from a week in a special little B&B down near the Black Oak River in Mayo and I’m now officially a convert to this idea of staying in a real home with a real person. Catherine’s B&B is just that. This morning, she brought in freshly laid eggs from her chickens while the smell of freshly baked bread drifted up the stairs and tempted me from the comfort of my bed.

Local Artisan Produce

Catherine knows I’m interested in food, so she told me that she gets her sausages, bacon and puddings from a local artisan butcher, Kelly’s, just up the road in Newport. The black pudding is so good here that it has won awards. I’m headed up there later to pick up some of this local produce.

On the subject of awards, I think Catherine should get one for her brown bread. It’s divine. She gave me her recipe; it was handed down to her by her mother. When I get back to my real life, I’m hoping to recreate that perfect homely Irish breakfast. Pity I won’t have that misty river to feast my eyes on – but I will have my memories.
