Our Motorcycle trip around the Wild Atlantic Way

Glendine ClonakiltyMick and Mari Hanly are the proprietors of Glendine Irish Home B&B in Clonakilty, West Cork which is on the route of the new Wild Atlantic Way. Avid motorcycle enthusiasts they recently took on the journey around the Wild Atlantic Way.

Watching the Wild Atlantic Way signs going up all around Clonakilty for the past few months seemed like a gauntlet had been thrown down to our Rosebud, a Honda Goldwing motorcycle that has travelled around Ireland, England and down as far as Monaco.

Glendine Wild Atlantic Way TripAccepting the challenge we saddled up Rosebud on the morning of Friday the 6th June and so began the Wild Atlantic Way Odyssey 2014. We reached the starting line in Muff, Co. Donegal on Saturday 7th June and had our first official WAW overnight in Greencastle, Co. Donegal. Thereafter we enjoyed overnights in Downings and Donegal Town, Co. Donegal, Belmullet and Westport, Co. Mayo, Galway City for two nights, Tralee and Kenmare, Co. Kerry and back home to Clonakilty Cork on the 16th June.

With the exception of the general Achill area, Co. Mayo, every single turn on every road/boreen was clearly signposted making the SatNav totally unnecessary for this route. We feasted on 1800 miles of some of the most wonderful natural scenery that we had often heard of but had never gotten around to visiting – even though they sit on our own doorstep!

Glendine Trip DerrynaneAs we drove from Muff in Co. Donegal to Kinsale in Co. Cork we constantly remarked that the sights we encountered on our journey were probably finer than most of the sights we had seen in the other countries we’ve visited over the years.  Having completed the saddle-sore tour of the longest coastal route in the world, we can now confidently talk to guests who are tackling the same route. Next time we plan to ramble around at our leisure.

What are our top recommendations you ask?

Top Area Destinations (in no particular order)

Killary Harbour, Co. Galway
Derrynane Bay, Co. Kerry
Healy Pass, Beara, Co. Cork
Inishowen Peninsula, Co. Donegal

Top Towns (in no particular order)

Westport, Co. Mayo
Galway City
Kenmare, Co. Kerry
Clonakilty, Co. Cork (obviously!!)
