Top 5 Things to See and Do on a Derry-Londonderry City Break

Derry-Londonderry City is the second largest city in Northern Ireland and there is so much to see and do while visiting the area. It’s a beautiful, historic and vibrant walled city on the west band of the River Foyle. Whether you are a history buff, have a love of natural beauty or just want to shop till you drop, Derry City has you covered! Here are my top 5 things to see and do when in the region:

Walled City of Derry-LondonderryCity Walls

Derry-Londonderry City is one of the finest examples of a walled city in all of Europe. The ancient 17th century wall approximately 1.5km in perimeter and provide a beautiful walkway around the inner city. Fantastic guided walking tours of the wall are available, which is a great way to learn about the fascinating history while also taking in your stunning surroundings.

Peace Bridge Derry-LondonderryPeace Bridge

The Peace Bridge is a beautiful bridge built across the River Foyle and was opened in 2011. As well as what it represents, the bridge is an architectural work of art and really is a sight to see. The bridge brings the city together wonderfully and provides the perfect spot to take in the stunning views. Lit up at night, the Peace Bridge is truly magnificent!

Museum of Free Derry

The Museum of Free Derry is an archive which focuses on the civil rights era of the 1960s and the troubles of the 1970s. Through exhibitions and galleries of old photos, newspapers, eyewitness documentaries and other memorabilia, this museum really brings Derry’s fascinating history to life. A visit is both enjoyable and informative as it gives a true insight into what life was like during those times.

Built in 1633, this cathedral is truly beautiful both on the outside and inside. It’s Derry City’s most historic building, containing artefact displays and information on famous associated personalities. It was restored in 2011 and guided walking tours are available to ensure you take in its full beauty and splendour!

Shopping in Derry-Londonderry CityShopping

Derry-Londonderry City is a real commercial hub and is in the perfect city to shop till you drop. It’s home to the award-winning Foyleside Shopping Centre and between it and the Richmond Centre, you are spoiled for choice. In addition to this, Derry City’s high streets have a whole array of little boutiques. The city also boasts a fantastic range of
cafes and restaurants to refuel after a busy day.
