Buttermilk Scones Recipe
If you have stayed in B&B Ireland’s Bed & Breakfast accommodation, you will know that many of our B&B hosts home-bake scones for their guests. I have a lovely recipe for Buttermilk Scones from one of our B&B owners that you can try at home. They only take about 20 minutes to prepare and 15 minutes to bake and are totally delicious. They are best served with a knob of butter or a dollop of cream and jam. Enjoy!
Makes approximately 16 scones
Ingredients
450g Self-Raising Flour
¼ Teaspoon Salt
1 Teaspoon Icing Sugar
60g Butter
430ml Buttermilk (approximately)
Method
1. Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7
2. Grease your baking tray
3. Sift flour, salt, icing sugar into a large bowl
4. Rub in butter to look like rough bread crumbs
5. Stir in enough buttermilk to mix into a soft, sticky dough
6. Turn dough onto floured surface, knead until smooth
7. Press dough out to 2cm thickness, cut 5.5cm round and place onto prepared baking tray
8. Glaze the top of each scone with plain milk for shine
9. Bake in oven for about 15 minutes until golden and well risen
10. Remove from baking tray and leave on wire rack to cool
