Irish Brown Treacle Bread Recipe

You may only be able to dream of travelling to the island of Ireland right now, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on enjoying Irish cuisine. I have a delicious recipe for Brown Treacle Bread that I know you will not only enjoy making, but will delight the taste-buds of everyone who is lucky enough to receive a slice!

Home-baking is back, so make someone happy today with a slice of Brown Treacle bread. Best served with a spreading of butter and a mug of tea/coffee. Heaven!



112g plain flour
100g coarse wholemeal flour
15g Bran
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon bread soda
½ teaspoon baking powder
13g butter
1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional)
45g Sultanas
½ tablespoon black treacle
200ml Buttermilk
1 egg
½ tablespoon treacle
Sesame seed (optional)
Required: 8-inch tin


1. Preheat oven to 200° Fan.
2. Sieve plain flour, salt, baking powder and bread soda together.
3. Add coarse wholemeal flour and bran wheat and mix.
4. Add sugar (optional).
5. Add cubes of butter and rub in.
6. Add sultanas and mix.
7. Place treacle in oven for 1 minute to soften.
8. Place egg in a small bowl and whisk.
9. Add Buttermilk and treacle and whisk.
10. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients.
11. Mix with a wooden spoon.
12. Grease tin.
13. Add mixture to tin, use a spatula to scrape down sides of bowl.
14. Place tin in oven for 25 minutes.
15. Take out of the oven and leave on a wire rack to cool.
