Irish Treacle Bread Recipe
Bed and breakfast hosts are renowned for their baking skills. Guests can enjoy some superb home baked goods during their stay. Rosemary Armstrong from Arch House B&B in County Fermanagh has shared with us her homemade Irish treacle bread recipe. Her treacle bread goes down a treat with her guests with many of them asking her for this special recipe.
Ingredients
500 g plain flour
Half pint buttermilk
2 tablespoons black treacle
Pinch salt
Heaped teaspoon ground ginger
Heaped tablespoon full of sultanas (optional)
Method
Sieve all dry ingredients into a bowl, make a well in the centre, add buttermilk and treacle and mix well. Ensure mixture is not too dry, if so add a little more buttermilk.
Place the mixture onto a floured board and shape into a loaf, put into loaf tin or tray and bake at the top of a high oven until brown and cooked through. Test with a skewer.
Enjoy with soup, or other savoury dishes, or if you have a sweet tooth - some jam!
