The Sperrins
The largest and least explored mountain range in Northern Ireland with dramatic landscapes, mountains, valleys, forests, lakes and outdoor and indoor pursuits. There are a number of excellent organized walks but if you don’t feel like walking there are four Scenic Driving Routes – these are included in the National Geographic’s prestigious list of the world’s top 101 scenic drives for 2012.
Tirnony Dolmen, Maghera
One mile north of Maghera stands a prehistoric tomb at least 4,000 – 6,000 years old. Dolmens are tomb structures with standing stones and a horizontal capstone.
Gortin Glen Forest Park
Gortin Glen Forest Park just outside Omagh was first opened in 1967 and has 1,534 hectares. As well as a Sika deer enclosure the main feature of the park is the Forest Drive, it’s a five-mile long drive, which offers some breathtaking views. There are a number of vista parks where you can pull in and without getting out of the car enjoy the magnificent scenery.
Beaghmore Stone Circles
The site at Beaghmore consists of 7 Bronze Age stone circles and alignments that were found only in the 1940’s during peat cutting. Some archaeologists believe that the circles have been constructed in relation to the rising of the sun at the solstice. Whether this is true or not they are quit magical and well worth going to see.
Ulster American Folk Park
Ulster American Folk Park, an outdoor museum which chronicles the story of emigration during the 18th and 19th centuries. It brings to life the various aspects of the emigrant’s tale on both sides of the Atlantic.
