Cycle the Westmeath Royal Canal Greenway this Summer!

Cycling in Mullingar has been given a great boost with further development of the Westmeath Royal Canal Greenway. The new route will be completed and ready to be enjoyed by the public this summer!

The existing Royal Canal Greenway has proved to be a big hit with locals and tourists as it provides a scenic route for cyclists and walkers along the waterside greenway without the hassle of any traffic and it's a safe route for both adults and children.

The new section of the greenway travels along the old railway corridor between Athlone and Mullingar. Like the canal greenway, this route is the perfect escape which brings you right into the thick of the Westmeath countryside. Westmeath is located in the heart of Ireland and is known as the 'Lakelands Country' because of its stunning landscapes, lush green fields and a collection of rivers, lakes and waterways that are perfect for angling and watersports. The Greenway does an excellent job in providing easy access to this beautiful countryside. Westmeath is also known for its fascinating history with stunning stately homes and monastic ruins such as Fore Abbey, as well as wonderful gardens and parks like Belvedere House and Gardens located near Mullingar and the Greenway route.

As the route follows the old railway corridor, the terrain is virtually flat and free from any traffic so it's suitable for all levels of fitness and all ages. Travellers along the route will get a pleasant surprise as the character of the old railway is still intact with remnants of the railway era evident at the old stations and crossings which have been afforded a Protected Structure status.

The Greenway is an ongoing project and when completed, will form a cycle route from Dublin to Galway.

Danabel Porridge Bread Recipe

I started making my Porridge Bread about a year ago. It was so popular with guests that I carried on making it. Now, I make it everyday and leave it on the breakfast table for my guests to help themselves. I am always complimented on how tasty it is. The wonderful thing about this recipe is that it is so easy to prepare, yet so delicious!

Thanks for the comments. Yes this is a wonderful route for walkers and cyclists. One of the many activities visitors can enjoy in the midlands.

The current Royal Canal Greenway has ended up being a major hit with local people and vacationers as it gives a panoramic detour to cyclists and walkers along the waterside scenic route without the bother of any activity and it's a sheltered course for both grown-ups and kids.
