Lovely Leitrim on the Wild Atlantic Way
Leitrim is one of the smallest counties in Ireland with only a smidgen of Wild Atlantic Way coastline, but good things come in small packages, as they say. For anyone keen enough to venture a little off the beaten track there are some real hidden gems to be found here.
Things to See and Do in Leitrim
The spectacular Glencar waterfall which tumbles down some 50 ft over a rocky outcrop on the southern side of Ben Bulben is a must when touring Leitrim. You can drive up to it and climb in behind the waterfall or dip your toes in the icy pool at the bottom. Lough Allen is where the Shannon River, the longest in Ireland rises in a place called the Shannon Pot, just north Drumshanbo. Famous for traditional music, the town hosts a festival of Irish culture “An Tóstal” every year on the June bank holiday weekend. With music in all the pubs, Sean Nós and Irish dancing on the streets, it is a great free family event.
Lough Gill, immortalized by William Butler Yeats “I will arise and go now to Innisfree” also belongs to County Leitrim, as does Parkes Castle, a plantation castle built by Robert Parke on the site of the original O’Rourke seat in the 17th century. From a distance it looks like a toy castle and is one of the best to visit as it has a raised walkway connecting the original tower house to the defenses. Restored using Irish oak and traditional thatching methods it now showcases these skills in a blacksmith’s cottage in the courtyard, which true to its nature went on fire as they often did in the old days, that’s authenticity for you! There is a very nice pub, Stanford’s just up the road in the charming little village of Dromahair if you are feeling peckish or thirsty!
